Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy describes what information linscp.net (the "Site") and the LinSCP software (the "Software") collect, why, how it is handled, and what choices you have. Plain English; minimal collection by design.
1. The Short Version
- We don't sell your data. Ever.
- The Site is mostly static. No advertising networks. No third-party trackers by default.
- The Software runs locally on your computer. It does not "phone home" with your file contents, your saved sessions, or your credentials.
- Server access logs (IP, user agent, requested URL, timestamp) are kept for 30 days for security and abuse prevention, then deleted.
- If you email us or open a GitHub issue, we retain that message so we can respond.
2. Information We Collect
2.1 Via the Site
- Server logs: IP address, user agent, requested URL, HTTP status, timestamp. Retained 30 days.
- Contact submissions: if you email legal@linscp.net or our support address, we retain your email and message so we can respond.
- SMS opt-in data (when/if SMS launches): your mobile phone number and the timestamp + form of your consent. See Section 6 below.
2.2 Via the Software
The Software is a desktop file-transfer client. It stores the following locally on your machine — nothing is sent to us:
- Saved session metadata (hostnames, usernames, port numbers, protocol settings).
- Saved passwords and SSH keys, if you choose to save them, encrypted with your operating-system credential store where supported.
- Transfer history, queue state, and bookmarks.
- Application logs and crash dumps, if you enable them.
The Software does not transmit telemetry, usage analytics, file contents, file names, or any session data to us or to any third party. The only network traffic it generates is to the remote servers you connect to.
2.3 Update Checks
If you have automatic update checks enabled, the Software makes a periodic HTTPS request to github.com to read the latest release tag. That request is subject to GitHub's privacy policy. You can disable automatic update checks in the Software's preferences.
3. How We Use Information
- Operate, secure, and improve the Site and the Software.
- Respond to your support requests, bug reports, and feature requests.
- Send transactional or opt-in announcements (release notes, security advisories) where you have requested them.
- Comply with legal obligations and enforce these terms.
4. What We Do NOT Do
5. Who We Share Information With
We share information only with the following limited categories:
- Hosting provider for the Site (we use a single VPS hosting provider for linscp.net).
- GitHub — if you contribute code, open an issue, or download a release, your interaction is subject to GitHub's terms and privacy policy.
- SMS messaging provider (when/if SMS launches) — solely to deliver the messages you opted in to receive. See Section 6.
- Law enforcement — when legally compelled by valid subpoena, warrant, or court order. We will narrow scope and notify you where lawful.
6. SMS Opt-In Data (TCR / 10DLC)
- Opt-in is explicit: you must check a consent box on a form that displays the consent language at the point of collection. We will not text you a confirmation message before you opt in.
- Required consent disclosure (sample):
"By providing your phone number and checking this box, you agree to receive recurring text messages from LinSCP with release announcements and security advisories. Message frequency varies (up to 4 messages/month). Msg & data rates may apply. Reply STOP to unsubscribe. Reply HELP for help. See our Privacy Policy and Terms."
- No sale or sharing of SMS opt-in data: Phone numbers collected for SMS purposes will not be shared with third parties or affiliates for any marketing or promotional purpose. Mobile information will not be shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing purposes, including any subsidiaries or affiliates.
- Opt-out: reply
STOPto any message at any time. You will receive a single confirmation message and no further messages. To opt back in, sign up again on the Site. - Help: reply
HELPfor help; or email legal@linscp.net; or call 724-431-5207. - Retention: we retain your opt-in record (phone number + timestamp + consent text shown) for as long as you are subscribed plus 4 years after opt-out, to demonstrate compliance with TCR / TCPA requirements.
7. Your Rights
7.1 California residents (CCPA / CPRA)
If you are a California resident, you have the right to: (a) know what categories of personal information we collect and the purposes; (b) request access to that information; (c) request deletion; (d) opt out of any "sale" or "sharing" of personal information — we do not sell or share personal information; (e) limit use of sensitive personal information — we do not collect sensitive personal information. To exercise these rights, email legal@linscp.net with the subject line "CCPA Request" and we will respond within 45 days.
7.2 European Economic Area / UK residents (GDPR)
If you are in the EEA or UK, you have the right to access, rectify, erase, restrict, or port your personal data, and to object to processing. The legal basis for our processing is (a) your consent (e.g., SMS opt-in, contact form) and (b) our legitimate interest in operating the Site and the Software securely. To exercise these rights, email legal@linscp.net. You may also lodge a complaint with your local data-protection authority.
7.3 All users
Regardless of jurisdiction, you may email legal@linscp.net to request a copy of your data, ask us to correct or delete it, or ask any privacy question.
8. Children (COPPA)
LinSCP is a developer tool aimed at adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe a child has provided personal information through the Site, contact legal@linscp.net and we will delete it.
9. Security
We use HTTPS for all Site traffic, store contact submissions on access-controlled servers, and apply security updates promptly. The Software stores credentials in your operating-system credential store where supported (Linux Secret Service / GNOME Keyring / KWallet). No system is perfectly secure; use strong passwords and SSH keys.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Policy from time to time. Material changes will be announced on this page with a new effective date and, where we have your email address, by email at least 14 days before they take effect. Continued use after the effective date constitutes acceptance.
